The experience

The first thing that hit me was the color. Everything in Jaisalmer seems dipped in honey, especially when we stepped through one of those old gates into the fort. Our guide, Halle, just grinned and let us stand there for a second. You could hear pigeons somewhere above and smell something frying from a tiny window. I remember thinking, this is nothing like the photos. There’s dust in the air and people everywhere, but it feels alive.

We wandered along these narrow cobblestone streets where motorbikes squeeze past you (I definitely jumped once), then Halle pointed at some faded carvings on a haveli wall. “Look at that,” he said, “two brothers built this part: see how different?” I squinted. One side was all neat lines, the other more wild. He laughed when I tried to say their names in Hindi, probably butchered both. The Patwon Ki Haveli was next, with its crazy detailed balconies. I kept touching the stone because it felt cool even though the sun was already hot.

At Sadar Bazar, we stopped for chai at this stall where everyone seemed to know our guide by name. An old woman selling mirror-work bags winked at me when I hesitated over a price. The market smelled like cardamom and fried sweets. I bought some without knowing what they were called (they were sticky and good). It wasn’t all perfect.
