The experience

The day starts at 9am with pickup from your accommodation or the train station. Your guide leads you through the maze of narrow streets inside Jaisalmer Fort, where about 3,000 people still live within the sandstone walls. The Salim Singh-Ki-Haveli and Patwon-Ki-Haveli stand out for their stone carving and latticework. These mansions were built by wealthy Jain merchants and many remain in excellent condition, decorated with rich carvings, stone inlays and ornamental lattice. You also visit Gadisar Lake before breaking for lunch.

After lunch, the route heads toward Sam Sand Dunes. En route you stop at the ancient Temple of Lodurwa and the Amar Sagar and Mool Sagar Complex, built in 1815, which houses a summer palace with paintings and historical displays. The evening camel safari takes you across the dunes to see ruins and temples in an unhurried pace, with live folk performers providing music and entertainment as the sun sets. Transport back to your hotel or train station closes the day.
