The experience
The tour starts at the Charminar, the best-preserved monument from when Hyderabad was founded in 1591. You climb to the first floor with your guide for close-up views of the architectural details and sweeping city vistas: on a clear day you can see the Golconda fort and Falaknuma palace from the top. The Charminar sits at the heart of the old city, so the walk naturally flows into Chudi Bazaar, where hundreds of shops line the streets and craftsmen are at work making the shiny, colorful lac bangles Hyderabad is known for. You watch them place each stone by hand and have the chance to bargain for a souvenir.
From the bazaar, the route takes you to the Mecca Masjid, where the Nizams of Hyderabad are buried, before ending at the Chowmahalla Palace. This is where the Nizams ruled for over 200 years, and the palace is one of the best preserved from that era. You walk through the palace buildings and see paintings, photographs, household items, weapons and the cars the royals used. The whole tour runs 4 hours and stays small group size, so the pace stays manageable even in the heat of the day.
Your guide speaks English throughout and provides bottled water and tea. If you book the option with hotel pickup, an air-conditioned car collects you at 8:00 AM from your place of stay and drops you back there when the walking portion ends. Without that add-on, you make your own way to the starting point. Public transportation options are nearby.
