The experience

The tour begins with hotel pickup at 9 am and heads straight to Virupaksha Temple, a 7th-century shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Your guide walks you through the intricate stone carvings and explains the towering gopuram (gateway tower) that dominates the entrance. By 10:30 am you reach Vithala Temple Complex, the UNESCO World Heritage site known for its stone chariot carved from a single block and its musical pillars. Each one produces a different note when struck. The guide points out the architectural details that made this complex one of the Vijayanagara Empire's greatest achievements.

After lunch (included on the full package), you visit Hazara Rama Temple, a smaller but ornate complex that once served as the private worship place of the Vijayanagara kings. The walls are covered with carved scenes from the Ramayana, and your guide reads the stories in the stone. Next comes the Royal Enclosure, the seat of power for the empire, where you see the Lotus Mahal (an ornate pavilion with an Islamic-style dome) and the Elephant Stables, a row of domed chambers built to house the royal elephants. A stroll through Hampi Bazaar follows, where you can browse handicrafts and souvenirs at your own pace.

At 4 pm you reach the Riverside Ruins along the Tungabhadra River, where the Krishna Temple and its stepped tank (Pushkarini) stand among scattered monuments. The final stop is Matanga Hill at 5 pm, where you climb to the summit for a panoramic view of the entire Hampi landscape as the sun sets. The tour returns you to your hotel by 6 pm.
