The experience

Vijaya Vittala temple opens the day. It sits on a polyhedron foundation and holds the stone chariot: a rough quartz sculpture carved with figures of soldiers, hunters, Portuguese traders and Arabs. The musical pillars inside are among the greatest works of temple art. From there, the guide takes you to King's Balance, a massive stone frame where legend says the Vijayanagara kings once weighed themselves against gold and gems to distribute to the poor.

Virupaksha temple comes next, the oldest in Hampi and built in the Hoysala period. Its tower rises 165 feet across eleven storeys, and the Tungabhadra river flows through the interior. You'll also see Sasivekalu Ganesha (an 8-foot statue carved from a single rock), and Ugra Narasimha, a 22-foot monolithic figure with a serpent hood at its back, carved during Krishnadevaraya's reign.

The royal enclosure forms the final stretch. Queen's Bath is the private bathing chamber of the empire, ornate and intact. The Lotus Mahal in the Zanana enclosure, the royal women's quarters, is a two-storied palace with pyramidal towers that give it a lotus shape. Hazara Rama temple, the only temple within the enclosure, is dedicated to Lord Ram. Before the day ends, you walk through an excavated water tank, the administrative enclosure, and an underground Shiva temple. The tour runs nine hours with your own guide and vehicle, so the pace stays yours.
