The experience

The tour starts in Panjim, Goa's state capital on the Mandovi River, where cobblestone streets and colorful Portuguese colonial villas line the city. The baroque Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church, built in 1619, sits on a hill overlooking the waterfront and Miramar Beach. From there, a walking section takes you through Fontainhas, the old Latin Quarter, where narrow winding streets, pale yellow and green villas with red tile roofs, and projecting balconies preserve the Portuguese influence that shaped the area.

Old Goa, the former capital of Portuguese India, holds the major religious monuments: the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which contains the remains of St. Francis Xavier, the domed Church of St. Cajetan modeled on St. Peter's in Rome, and the vast Se Cathedral built across the 16th and 17th centuries with ornate chapels and a bell tower. The two forts round out the day. Fort Aguada, built in 1612 on the mouth of the Mandovi River, was the most strategically important Portuguese fort in the region. It held 79 cannons at its height and housed a four-story lighthouse erected in 1864, the oldest of its kind in Asia. Reis Magos Fort, originating as an armed outpost in 1493 and rebuilt by the Portuguese in 1541, was restored beginning in 2008 and now serves as a cultural center.

Private transport and an English-speaking guide are included throughout. The tour runs six to eight hours depending on how long you spend at each stop. Pickup comes from your port or hotel, and all fees and taxes are covered in the price.
