The experience
McLeodGanj, known as Little Lhasa, is the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile and home to the Dalai Lama. The tour begins with a walk through the town to the main temple where the Dalai Lama grants audiences to visitors when in residence, and you'll see his residence nearby. The local market is famous for Tibetan handicrafts: a chance to see what artisans make and sell in the quarter itself.
From McLeodGanj, the guide takes you to the Church of St. John in the Wilderness, a neo-gothic structure built in 1852 with Belgian stained glass windows and the burial site of Lord Elgin, a British Viceroy of India. A walk around Dal Lake follows, a picturesque spot ringed by Deodar forests with a Hindu temple dedicated to Durveshwar Mahadev nearby. You'll also visit the Tibetan Children's Village, a non-profit organization caring for orphans and young refugees from Tibet, where the school combines modern education with Tibetan Buddhist heritage.
After the morning stops, your guide brings you to a local restaurant for lunch (your own cost). The afternoon centers on the Norbulingka Institute, a preservation center for traditional Tibetan art with an exhibition hall where you can watch artisans at work. The tour ends with hotel drop-off.
