The Experience
Li was already grinning when we ducked under the faded archway into Valiyangadi market. I could smell cardamom before I saw it — sharp and sweet, mixed with the tang of old wood and something frying nearby. The light filtered through slatted windows and made everything look golden for a minute or two.

Sreeja told us about Vasco da Gama landing at Kappad Beach (she said “imagine sailing here for months just to taste pepper!”), and I tried to picture those ships bobbing on the horizon.
