Step-by-step itinerary

Explore British architecture in Chennai

  • Start at Egmore railway station
  • Visit Central Railway Station
  • See Victoria Public Hall
  • Walk to Ripon Building
  • Visit Southern Railways headquarters
  • Cross Napier Bridge
  • Explore Senate House
  • End at Victory War Memorial

The Experience

You're walking through Madras as it was built, not as a museum piece, but as the physical record of how an empire shaped a city and how that city reclaimed it. The Egmore railway station opens the walk: over a century old, designed by Henry Irwin to rival London's Charring Cross, it sits at the intersection of Gothic and Dravidian styles. From there the route moves through the Central Railway Station (1873, now handling 350,000 passengers daily), Victoria Public Hall (opened 1887 for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee), and the white-domed Ripon Building (1913, now the office of the Mayor). Each stop is a building that was built to project control and has become a symbol of modern India instead.

The walk continues to the Southern Railways headquarters, completed in 1921 as one of India's first reinforced-concrete structures, then crosses the Napier Bridge (1869, widened in 1943) to reach the Senate House on Marina Beach. Built between 1874 and 1879 by Robert Chisholm, the Senate House blends Indo-Saracenic and Byzantine details (porticos, a convocation hall, a library), and serves as the administrative center of the University of Madras. The route ends at the Victory War Memorial, a monument to the Allied victory in both World Wars. A guide who knows the architects, the builders and the transition from colonial to independent India walks the whole route with you, and tea is included.

You pick between a private tour with hotel pickup or a group walk that meets on-site. The group stays small, and the pace is set by the guide's stops at each building rather than by rushing between them. The walk covers ground, roughly three hours on foot, so it suits travelers comfortable with a morning or afternoon of walking through the city center.

What’s included

  • A live guide in English who walks the full route and explains the architecture, history and transition of each building from colonial symbol to modern landmark.
  • tea or coffee at a stop during the walk.
  • all taxes, fees and handling charges. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included if you book the private tour option.
  • the group walk meets on-site and you arrange your own transport to the starting point.

Is this one for you?Book the private tour if you're arriving in Chennai and want hotel pickup included. Choose the group walk if you're staying nearby and prefer to meet the guide on-site. The fixed three-hour duration and walking pace suit travelers who want to spend a morning or afternoon on foot rather than a full-day itinerary, and the small group size keeps the experience intimate whether you travel alone or with one or two others.

Top questions

What is the Egmore railway station and why does the walk start there?

Egmore Station is over a century old and one of the earliest buildings in Indo-Saracenic style, designed by Henry Irwin to be larger than Charring Cross Station in London. It blends Gothic and Dravidian design and serves as the ideal entry point to understanding how British architects shaped Chennai's skyline.

How long does the walk take and how much ground do we cover?

The walk runs for two and a half hours and takes you through eight major landmarks across the city center, from Egmore Station through the Central Railway Station, Victoria Public Hall, Ripon Building, Southern Railways headquarters, Napier Bridge, Senate House and the Victory War Memorial.

Can I bring my five-year-old on this tour?

Children from age five are welcome on the walk. The pace is set by the guide's stops at each building, so younger children will need to be comfortable walking for the full duration and standing while the guide explains each site.

What's included in the price, and do I need to arrange my own transport?

The tour includes a live English-speaking guide, tea, and all taxes and fees. If you book the private option, hotel pickup and drop-off are included. If you choose the group walk, you meet the guide at the starting point and arrange your own transport to Egmore Station.

Who designed these buildings and what makes them architecturally important?

The landmarks were designed by British architects like Henry Irwin, George Harding and Robert Chisholm, and built by local contractors including Samynatha Pillai and Namberumal Chetty. They showcase Victorian Gothic, Indo-Saracenic and Byzantine styles, and many were among the first of their kind in India. The Southern Railways headquarters was one of the earliest reinforced-concrete structures on the continent.

Is this walk suitable if I have limited mobility or a spinal condition?

The walk covers three hours on foot through the city center with multiple stops. It is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or pregnant travelers. If you have mobility concerns, contact the operator before booking to discuss the route and pace.
