The experience

The day starts before most of Agra wakes. A driver picks you up from your hotel at 6 a.m. and takes you straight to the Taj Mahal to watch it emerge in the early light, when the crowds are still thin and the marble catches the first sun. After two hours there, you return to your hotel by 9 a.m. for breakfast and a break: a pause built into the schedule so you are not moving the entire time.

At 11 a.m., the guide meets you to visit Agra Fort, the red sandstone fortress Akbar built in 1565. The guide walks you through the courtyards and chambers, explaining the layout and the history written into the stone. Lunch follows at a five-star hotel restaurant, where you eat from a multi-cuisine menu and rest before the afternoon push. The itinerary then takes you to see a replica of the Taj Mahal (a smaller version that gives a different angle on the original's design) before the final stop at Mehtab Bagh, the garden on the opposite bank of the Yamuna River where the Taj Mahal appears in reverse, framed by trees and water at sunset.
