The experience
Day one starts with pickup from Amritsar airport, railway station or bus station and a transfer to your hotel. After you settle in, the drive goes straight to the Attari-Wagah Border, where Indian and Pakistani soldiers meet each day just before sunset for a 30-minute ceremony that has run since 1959. The display is built around a show of national pride from both sides. Evening brings either the Golden Temple's night ceremony (on request) or time in the local market, then you return to the hotel for the night.
Day two begins after breakfast with a city tour centered on the Golden Temple, Harimandir Sahib, the most sacred pilgrimage site in Sikhism and the spiritual heart of the faith. From there you move to Jallianwala Bagh, the garden where over 2,000 Indians were killed or wounded by British forces on April 13, 1919, a turning point in India's independence struggle. The itinerary also includes the Partition Museum, Fort Gobindgarh, and the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum. The rest of the day is yours: shop in the city's malls or wander the old markets before returning to your hotel or heading to the airport or station.
Private transportation runs throughout in an air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water provided. A tour guide can be added at checkout if you want context and stories at each stop. The tour suits all fitness levels and is wheelchair accessible. Families with infants can bring a pram or stroller, and public transit options are nearby if you need them.
