The Experience
The day starts with a scenic drive past volcanoes and lava fields toward the glacier lagoon. You'll pass Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano that disrupted European air travel in 2010, and stop at Skógafoss, one of Iceland's most photographed waterfalls, where legend says a treasure chest lies hidden behind the cascade. A lunch break follows before you reach Jökulsárlón itself.
The boat ride is the centerpiece: you'll spend roughly 30 minutes cruising among icebergs that have calved from Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and drifted into the lagoon's deep blue waters. Some of these ice sculptures are over 1,000 years old. The boat gets you close enough to see the intricate detail and the vivid shades of blue that form inside the ice. After the lagoon, you walk Diamond Beach, where fragments of the same icebergs wash up on black volcanic sand, creating a stark and glittering shoreline.
