Ride through Reykjavik at midnight with the sun still burning the sky

You ride a high-spec Can-Am ATV for two hours through Icelandic mountain trails while the sun circles the horizon without setting. The tour includes all protective gear, a professional guide, hotel pickup at 8pm, and access to the operator's advanced headquarters. Groups stay small, under twenty riders, and you'll reach peaks with views back over Reykjavik and the surrounding landscape. No experience required, but you do need a valid driver's license to ride.

Step-by-step itinerary

Midnight Sun ATV Adventure in Reykjavik

  • Pickup from Reykjavik
  • Drive to ATV headquarters
  • Receive safety briefing and instructions
  • Wear gear: overalls, helmets, gloves
  • Ride ATV through Icelandic wilderness
  • Ascend Reykjavik Peak and Wolf Peak
  • Enjoy views of Reykjavik and midnight sun
  • Return to headquarters

The Experience

The light doesn't leave. At 8pm when you're picked up and driven to the ATV headquarters on the outskirts of Reykjavik, the sun is still high enough to cast a shadow. By the time you're suited up in overalls, helmet, gloves and a balaclava — the gear laid out and ready — you understand what the operator means by "midnight sun adventure." Between late June and mid-July, Iceland doesn't really get dark. The sky just shifts color.

The headquarters is new, equipped with hot coffee and proper bathrooms, and the fleet is Can-Am quads — fifty of them, all top-spec machines. Your guide runs through the safety briefing and how to handle the bike, and then you're out on the trails. Two full hours riding through Icelandic wilderness, ascending toward Reykjavik Peak and Wolf Peak Mountain, the terrain rough and open beneath you. The views drop back toward the city and the water beyond it, Hafravatn Lake visible in the distance. Around midnight, if the weather holds, the sky does something strange — the sun dips just past the horizon and for a few moments the whole sky glows gold and orange before the sun climbs again. You're high enough to see it happen.

The operator has been running this tour longer than anyone else in Iceland. Groups stay under twenty people, which means the trails don't feel crowded and the guide can actually see you. The ride is physical — your arms and core work the whole time — but the operator says it's suitable for most fitness levels. You do need a valid driver's license to ride solo, and if you're traveling with someone, the shared-rider option means one person drives while the other sits behind. Either way, you're moving through daylight that never quite becomes night, in a landscape that most people only see in photographs.

Pickup happens at 8pm from your Reykjavik accommodation. The whole thing — drive to HQ, briefing, two hours on the trails, drive back — takes about two and a half hours total. Bring sunglasses. The midnight sun is brighter than you'd expect.

What’s included

Your adventure includes hotel pickup at 8pm and drop-off after the ride, a 2.5-hour ATV experience with a professional guide, all protective gear (helmet, gloves, overalls, ski mask, and rain gear), and access to the operator's advanced headquarters with free hot coffee and bathrooms. The price is per person; you can choose between riding solo or sharing a quad with another rider.
