The experience
What makes this different from a group dog sledding tour is that you're in control. You sit on the sled and drive the huskies yourself while the musher rides along, narrating the route and answering questions about how dog sledding works, the dogs' individual personalities, and life in Iceland. The route starts from the musher's doorstep and climbs into the woodland around their home, then descends through countryside down to sea level, with mountains framing the whole run. The landscape shifts as you go: forest gives way to open ground, and the huskies' power pulling you through it is the whole point of being there.
After the sledding, you're invited into the musher's home, where the huskies live. This is where the trip slows down. You change out of your gear, use the bathroom, and settle in with coffee, tea, or hot chocolate while the dogs (all of them friendly and eager for attention) come around for cuddles and belly rubs. Each husky has its own personality, and they're used to meeting new people. There's no schedule here. You spend as much time with them as you want, asking the musher about their lives and how they work together as a team.
Pickup is included, so you don't need a rental car to get there. The whole experience runs three hours, and the musher is willing to adjust the route or the pace to match what you're after, as long as it's reasonable. Infants can come along if they sit on an adult's lap.
