Summary

Gullfoss power, geysers bursting and warm Secret Lagoon soak

You’ll walk through Þingvellir’s wild rift valley, watch Strokkur geyser erupt right in front of you, stand close enough to Gullfoss waterfall to feel its spray, then unwind in the Secret Lagoon’s geothermal warmth before heading back to Reykjavik — tired but happy you came.

I didn’t think I’d be so taken by rocks. But walking through Þingvellir, with wind sneaking under my scarf and our guide Sigrún pointing out where two continents actually meet — it’s hard not to feel small. The ground is split and raw, black stone against patches of snow. She told us stories about old assemblies here, people gathering for centuries. I tried to imagine the noise of crowds echoing off those cliffs. All I heard was the crunch of gravel under our boots and a raven somewhere overhead.

After that we drove out to the Geysir area. Strokkur did its thing — every few minutes, a sudden whoosh and boiling water shot up. The smell was like boiled eggs (not my favorite), but it felt weirdly alive here, steam drifting everywhere. There were little paths between bubbling pools; I almost slipped but caught myself, which made Li from Singapore laugh. We compared photos after — hers caught the exact second before eruption, mine was just steam.

Standing at Gullfoss was louder than I expected. You get close enough to feel the spray on your face, even if you try to dodge it. The sun came out for a minute and there was a faint rainbow over the canyon — honestly, I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home. We all just stood there for a while not saying much.

The last stop was the Secret Lagoon in Flúðir. It’s not fancy or crowded like some other places — just an old pool with hot water and locals chatting quietly in Icelandic nearby. The water felt silky after a cold day outside, and you could see little geysers puffing away at the edge of the pool. My skin smelled faintly of minerals afterward (not bad). We drove back to Reykjavik sleepy and warm, Wi-Fi on but nobody really talking much anymore.
