The experience

The day starts with a drive to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where tectonic plates meet in a dramatic rift valley: the original site of Iceland's parliament, founded in 930 AD. You'll spend 20 to 40 minutes exploring the geology and history at your own pace before heading to the geothermal area. There, Strokkur erupts every 4 to 8 minutes, shooting boiling water up to 25 meters into the air, while the original Geysir lies dormant nearby. The landscape around it is striking: vibrant yellow sulfur, red iron-rich rocks, and pale silica deposits create a landscape unlike anywhere else.

After the Golden Circle stops, you board the Sleipnir Monster Truck for the drive into the Highlands via the Kjölur route and onto Langjökull Glacier. Once inaccessible, the glacier is now reachable in this powerful red truck, which handles the terrain safely. Your guide shares insights into glaciers, geology, local legends, and Icelandic folklore during the ride. Weather permitting, you can try glacier golf, sled down a snowy slope, or taste pure glacier water straight from the source. At the pop-up glacier café, you warm up with hot cocoa, tea, Jökla liqueur, and an Icelandic Kleinur pastry.

The final stop is Gullfoss, the "Golden Falls," where glacial water plunges into a deep canyon with enough force to create mist and sometimes a rainbow in the spray. After taking in the waterfall, you board the minibus for the scenic drive back to Reykjavik. A stop at Geysir offers the chance to buy a packed lunch if you want one. Bring snacks and water for the rest of the day. The glacier portion's duration may shift due to driving conditions on and to the glacier, and the itinerary can be modified for weather.
