The experience
The day starts in Ísafjörður, where you'll meet your guide and get fitted for a wetsuit and life vest. A 20-minute drive takes you to an alpine lake ringed by dramatic mountains in Bolungarvík, where the water sits so clear you can see through it. After a safety briefing and paddleboarding introduction, you push off and paddle across the lake at your own pace. There's no rush, no other boats, just the sound of water and mountains.
Midway through, you'll pull ashore for lunch by a waterfall. The guide will have the spot picked out, and you'll sit there eating what you've brought while the water cascades in the background. It's the kind of quiet that only happens when you're far from roads and crowds. After lunch, you can paddle more or simply float and take in the view before heading back across the water to the trailhead.
The whole thing runs 4 hours from start to finish. Beginners and experienced paddlers both go: the guide adjusts the pace to the group, and the calm water means you're not fighting conditions. You'll need to bring your own food and drinks for the lunch stop. Everything else (the board, the paddle, the wetsuit, the life vest, the ride from Ísafjörður) is arranged.
