The Experience

“That’s the waterfall of the gods,” our guide said, but honestly I was still busy trying to pronounce Goðafoss (the “ð” gets me every time). The drive from Akureyri port wasn’t long—maybe 40 minutes?—but it felt like we’d crossed into another world. Snow patches clung to the hills even though it was July, and the air tasted sharp. When we finally stepped off the bus, you could hear Godafoss before you saw it—a low roar that got louder as we walked closer. Mist everywhere, and that cold river smell. I tried to take photos but mostly just stared. Someone next to me said it looked like something out of a saga.

We had about 45 minutes at the falls, which is enough if you’re not rushing (though I did wish for five more minutes—I always do). Our guide told us how chieftains threw their old gods’ idols into these waters when Iceland turned Christian. I kept picturing that moment while watching the horseshoe of water crash down. There were families with strollers and older folks too—everyone seemed to find their own quiet spot. One couple even sat on a rock eating Skyr; I don’t know why but that made me smile.

The drive back didn’t retrace our steps exactly—we went through Fnjoskadalur Valley, which our guide pronounced so fast I gave up trying. The landscape kept changing: green fields, then rocky slopes, then suddenly this huge view over Eyjafjordur Bay with mountains on both sides. At some point someone pointed out sheep way up on a hillside (how do they get up there?). We stopped at an Akureyri viewpoint before heading back to port—the whole town spread out below us, red roofs and all. It was quieter than I expected; maybe everyone was just taking it in.
