Sip legendary Tokaji Aszú in a hand-carved cellar with vineyard vistas and family tales

A wine tasting at Naár Winery on Gombos Hill in Hercegkút puts you inside a cellar the winemaker and his son dug out and restored themselves, where you taste six local wines (yellow muscat, furmint, hárslevelű and the legendary Tokaji Aszú) with cheese and meat. The experience lasts about two hours and sits among UNESCO World Heritage wine cellars in the heart of the Tokaj region.

The experience

The cellar itself is the centerpiece. The winemaker carved it out by hand with his son, and you walk through the stone passages he restored, learning how the family has worked this land for centuries. The tasting includes six carefully selected wines: you'll taste yellow muscat, furmint, and hárslevelű alongside the Tokaji Aszú, the world's first sweet wine and the one Tokaj is known for. Each bottle comes with the story behind it: why the winemaker chose it, what the vintage tells you, how the soil and the microclimate shape the flavor. A selection of local cheese and meat arrives alongside the wines, and you can request vegetarian or gluten-free options.

After the tasting, the hill itself opens up. You can walk the 14-station Calvary on your own for panoramic views that stretch all the way to the town of Tokaj, or head to the nearby Kőporos cellar row, another historic wine district carved into the same hillside. The setting is intimate (a family operation, not a commercial winery), and the winemaker is there to talk you through what you're tasting.
