The experience
You meet at Madach Imre street in central Budapest, get your KTM bike and helmet ready, then ride to the Nyugati (Western) Railway Station. From there, a train takes you to the Danube Bend region. The route is flexible. You can adjust the pace, add stops or take it easier depending on the group's fitness and mood.
At the Ipoly River, you board a 2- or 3-person canoe and paddle through the slow-moving water with your guide. This is the National Park of Danube-Ipoly, and the paddling is real (you'll need to work the paddle), but the river moves gently. In summer, the tour includes swimming stops, so bring snacks and water for the river section. After leaving the canoes on the Danube beach at Szob, you switch to your bike and ride the Eurovelo 6 route south to Nagymaros, passing views of Visegrad Castle and the ruins of the Hungarian Kings' fortress. A local restaurant stop lets you rest and eat before the train ride back to Budapest.
Life jackets, helmets and bottled water are provided. The tour suits outdoor enthusiasts and families with children 12 and older, though you must be a confident swimmer: the operator requires this. The flexibility to adjust stops and riding intensity is what makes this work for mixed fitness levels, as long as everyone can handle a moderate day on both bike and water.
