The Experience

The Etyek wine region sits an hour outside Budapest in vine-covered countryside dotted with old cellars and grape presses. You leave Budapest in the morning or afternoon—your choice of departure time—and travel by air-conditioned minivan with your guide to the first of two or three family-run wineries. The winemakers themselves pour and talk through their wines, explaining how they work the land and what makes their whites and sparkling wines stand out. You taste between six and twelve glasses across the stops, depending on which option you book.

The Morning tour with Lunch pairs eight wine tastings with a two-course home-made meal at one of the cellars. The Afternoon tour with Dinner goes deeper—twelve glasses of wine and a full dinner—so the experience stretches across the afternoon. If you want to focus on Hungarian food instead, the Culinary-bites option centers on the flavors of the kitchen: home-made pate, sausage, paprika-cream and other traditional tastes, paired with six glasses of quality wine. Snacks come with every tasting; water is included with lunch or dinner.

Groups stay small—no more than twelve people—so the winemakers can give you real attention and the guide can answer questions as you move between cellars. Pickup happens only at selected downtown Budapest locations, so check the list before booking; public transportation to the region is also available if you prefer to meet the group there instead.
