The Experience

You arrive at the cave entrance with a helmet on your head and a headlight clipped to it. The guide briefs the group—small enough that everyone moves at the same pace—and you descend into the labyrinth. What unfolds over the next three hours is not a walk through a cave. You climb. You crawl through passages so narrow your shoulders nearly touch both walls. You haul yourself up rock faces and lower yourself down into chambers that open suddenly beneath you. The cave system stretches 30 km through multiple levels, and you move through it using your hands and legs as much as your feet.

The physical demand is real and constant. This is not for someone looking to stroll and take photos. You need to be comfortable with your body in tight spaces, with climbing that requires arm strength, and with the kind of exertion that leaves you breathing hard. The guide watches the group and adjusts the route if needed, but there is no shortcut through the narrow bits—you either fit through or you don't. The helmet protects your head in low passages; the headlight cuts through absolute darkness so you can see the rock in front of you and plan your next move.
