The Experience

I barely had time to get my bearings after stepping off the ship in Roatán before Bill — our driver for the day — waved us over with this easy grin. The van was blissfully cool inside (I’m not built for humidity), and we cruised along the coast, just twenty minutes but enough to catch glimpses of those wild blue Caribbean colors through the window. Bill pointed out a couple of places he liked for baleadas, which I still can’t pronounce right. He said we’d have plenty of time at West Bay Beach, so no rush — and you could feel he meant it.

The Henry Morgan Beach Resort sits right on West Bay, and honestly, I didn’t expect it to be so relaxed. We got our wristbands and wandered straight onto the sand — fine, almost white, with that salty breeze that sticks to your skin. There were families from Tegucigalpa next to us, kids shrieking in Spanish every time a wave rolled in. I found myself just sitting there for a while, toes buried in warm sand, watching these little fish dart around in the shallows. Wi-Fi actually worked (surprise), so I sent a picture to my sister back home who immediately accused me of gloating.

We had access to everything: pool (which I skipped because… that ocean), showers, changing rooms. The beach chairs were all lined up but nobody seemed territorial about them — people here are easygoing about space. Lunch wasn’t included but the beachfront bar made these grilled shrimp skewers that smelled like garlic and lime from halfway down the sand. Not cheap but worth it; if you go hungry here it’s your own fault.

At some point I lost track of time completely — which is rare for me on a cruise stop. Bill checked in now and then (“todo bien?”) but never hovered or hurried us along. The drive back was quiet; sunburned and sandy, windows open just enough to let in that last bit of salt air before reality crept back in. Still thinking about how simple it felt just being there for a few hours.
