Capuchin monkeys, pirate caves & a salty swim in Roatan

You’ll meet playful capuchin monkeys at Gumbalimba Park, cross jungle bridges with your local guide, explore pirate legends in hidden caves, then cool off at West Bay Beach before heading back. It’s an easygoing day full of animal encounters and small surprises you’ll remember long after leaving Roatan.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We stepped off the van into Gumbalimba Park and right away I could hear parrots squawking somewhere up in the trees. Our guide, Carlos, waved us over — he had this easy way of talking, like he’d grown up with every monkey here. The air was heavy and green, kind of sweet from all the flowers. I didn’t expect to laugh so much at the capuchin monkeys; one tried to swipe my sunglasses while another just sat on my shoulder like we were old friends. The birds were even bolder — a scarlet macaw landed right next to me and gave this sideways look that made me nervous to move.

Carlos led us along a trail through the jungle — not far, maybe ten minutes — but it felt like we were deep inside something wild. There was this suspension bridge that bounced under our feet (my niece squealed the whole way), and everywhere you looked there were iguanas sunning themselves on rocks. The insectarium was cooler than I thought it would be; thousands of preserved bugs from all over the world in these glass cases, and honestly it was nice to get out of the heat for a minute. We ducked into a pirate cave too — maps on the walls, old pistols behind glass, stories about Bay Island pirates that Carlos told with a grin like he half believed them himself.

After all that wandering, we drove down to West Bay Beach for a swim. The sand was soft and hot underfoot; I could still smell sunscreen mixed with salt water when I flopped down by the shore. Some families went straight for the pool but I just floated in the sea for ages, letting everything slow down. It’s funny how quiet it gets once you’re out past where the kids are splashing — just water and sky and your own thoughts for a bit.
