The experience
Four to five hours at Gumbalimba Park means you move through the sanctuary without rushing. The route takes you on jungle trails and across hanging bridges where you'll spot turtles, macaws, monkeys and iguanas in their habitat. You also walk through an insectarium and enter a pirate cave, learning about Roatan's history and culture as you go. The park is built for families, and the mix of walking and wildlife keeps the pace varied enough that younger travelers stay engaged.
Your guide leads in English or Spanish, and private transportation picks you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle with WiFi on board. The tour includes two optional stops on the way: a rum distillery where you can taste and buy, and a viewpoint at one of the island's highest peaks where you can see both the West End and West Bay in one frame. A third optional stop passes through Flowers Bay, where houses sit on stilts over the water and the official Roatan sign offers a photo moment. You choose which stops fit your day.
At checkout, pick between the walking tour alone or walking tour plus zip-line adventure. The zip-line option lets you move through the canopy after you've covered the ground-level trails. Neither option includes towels, food, drinks or gratuities, so plan accordingly if you're spending the full afternoon there.
