Step-by-step itinerary
Guided bicycle tour in Georgetown
- Take pictures and learn history
- Visit Guyana National Museum
- See the 1763 Monument
- Explore Stabroek Market
- Visit historic church interior
- View old lighthouse and learn history
The experience
You'll spend two hours on a bicycle moving through Georgetown's streets and stopping at landmarks that shaped the city. The route takes you past the 1763 Monument, a site central to Guyana's past, where you'll have time to photograph it and hear its story. You'll roll through Stabroek Market while it's busy with traders and vendors, and if you want, you can stop to buy seasonal fruit. A local guide in English leads the whole way, pointing out details you'd miss riding alone.
The Guyana National Museum sits on the route as an optional stop: you can ride past it or spend time inside looking at artifacts from the 1900s and the first sample of oil found in Guyana. You'll also see the old lighthouse (unsafe to enter now, but your guide will explain its history), and visit a church to see its interior and learn who built it. Each stop is short enough that the day stays moving. You're not standing around waiting.
The tour provides a bicycle fitted for the route, a helmet and other safety gear, bottled water and snacks to keep you going. Children can join from age 8. If you're comfortable on a bike and want to see Georgetown the way locals move through it (stopping when something catches your eye, moving on when you're ready), this tour trades the pace of a bus for the flexibility of pedaling yourself.
