Summary

Walk ancient Tikal temples, climb pyramids and share lunch in the jungle

You’ll fly from Guatemala City straight into the heart of Tikal’s jungle ruins, walk ancient plazas with a local guide sharing stories, climb pyramids above the canopy, and share a simple lunch surrounded by birdsong before heading home tired but changed.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The day started before sunrise, which I’ll admit felt rough at first — but flying out of Guatemala City as the sky turned pink was worth it. The flight to Flores only took about an hour, and already you could see the green stretching out forever below. Our guide, Carlos, met us at the airport with this easy smile and a van that smelled faintly of last night’s rain. He told us stories about his grandmother’s village on the way to Tikal. I tried to keep up with his Spanish but mostly just nodded along — he switched to English when he caught me zoning out.

Walking into Tikal National Park is something I still think about. It’s not quiet — there are birds everywhere, and sometimes you hear howler monkeys off in the trees. The air is thick and earthy, almost sweet. Carlos led us through these old stone plazas where the light comes down in stripes between branches. He showed us Temple I (the Grand Jaguar), explaining how they used to carry kings up those steep steps for ceremonies. I touched one of the stones — it felt warm from the sun but rough under my hand.

Lunch was in this open-air spot inside the park — beans, chicken, tortillas, nothing fancy but honestly perfect after all that walking. There was a family from Antigua at our table who laughed when I tried to say “gracias” with their accent (I definitely didn’t nail it). Afterward we had some time to wander on our own; I climbed Temple IV even though my legs were shaking by then. Up top it’s windy and you can see treetops forever, with ruins poking out here and there like old teeth. Didn’t expect that view to hit so hard.

By late afternoon we were back in Flores for our flight home, shoes muddy and shirts sticking to our backs. The whole thing felt like it happened both fast and slow — maybe that’s just what happens when you spend a day walking where people lived thousands of years ago.
