The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel early in the morning and a drive to Chimaltenango, where Iximché sits as the ruins of the Kaqchikel capital. Once the Spanish arrived in 1524, they made it their first capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala, and held it for only three years before moving to what became Ciudad Vieja near Antigua. What remains are the architectural bones of palaces, plazas, and ball courts that were dismantled during the conquest. Their stones were hauled away to build Spanish structures in nearby Tecpán. Your guide walks you through what those buildings were, how they were decorated, and what the conquest meant for the kingdom that built them.

If the timing aligns, you may encounter Mayan priests performing religious ceremonies at the site's active sacred altars: a living practice that continues on the same ground where it has for centuries. The operator asks for respect and discretion during these moments. After the archaeological site, the tour moves to Tecpán for lunch at one of the area's established restaurants, known for regional dishes. The day ends with the drive back to your hotel.

Is this one for you?The seven-hour commitment leaves the rest of your day free if you start early, but it rules out combining this with other major sites in the region on the same day. Book this if Iximché is your primary focus and you want the archaeology explained by someone trained in it, rather than a quick stop on a longer regional tour.

What exactly is Iximché and why was it important to the Maya?

Iximché was the capital of the Kaqchikel kingdom, one of the major Mayan ethnic groups whose descendants still live in Guatemala. The Spanish conquered it in 1524 and made it their first capital in the region, but abandoned it three years later. The ruins visible today are the remains of palaces, plazas, and ball courts that once stood as the center of Kaqchikel power.

Will I see active Maya ceremonies during the tour?

You may encounter Mayan priests performing religious ceremonies at the site's sacred altars, though it depends on timing and what is happening on the day of your visit. If ceremonies are taking place, the operator asks visitors to observe with respect and discretion.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to pay for separately?

The tour includes hotel pickup, transport in an air-conditioned minivan, the certified guide, park entry fees, and bottled water. Lunch in Tecpán and gratuities are not included and are your own cost.

How physically demanding is this tour?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You'll be walking among the ruins and exploring the site, but there are no strenuous climbs or technical requirements.
