Fourteen enclosures, a lagoon crossing, and lunch: one day at Auto Safari

A private wildlife auto safari from Puerto Quetzal takes you through 14 spacious enclosures at Auto Safari, where rescued and sanctuary animals roam in habitats mimicking the wild. You ride through each enclosure by bus with a certified guide, swim in the park's pool, eat lunch at the restaurant, and cross the lagoon by boat to spot birds and monkeys. The eight-hour tour includes transportation from Marina Pez Vela, entrance, water and a guide who speaks English or Spanish.

The experience

The day starts with pickup at Marina Pez Vela in Escuintla and a drive to Auto Safari, a wildlife sanctuary operating since 1980. The park holds 96 animals across 14 enclosures (zebras, lions, hippos, monkeys, birds and others) many of them rescued or relocated from zoos. The enclosures are built to resemble natural habitats, so the animals move and behave as they would in the wild, and you watch from the safety of the bus as it rolls through each one.

After the bus tour, the day opens up. You can swim in the park's pool, order lunch at the on-site restaurant, and take a boat across the lagoon where more birds and monkeys live. A certified guide travels with you the whole time, pointing out animals and answering questions in English or Spanish. The park also maintains a veterinarian on staff, and over the years births like Imani, a male giraffe, have been born here: a sign of the care the animals receive.

The full day is eight hours from start to finish. Bottled water comes with the tour, and lunch is included. You just need to arrange gratuities for the guide if you wish. Children from age two are welcome, and the park is suitable for all fitness levels, though the bus tour means you are sitting most of the time.
