The experience
The boat leaves from the Flores dock after pickup at your hotel on the island or in Santa Elena. Your guide will take you across Lake Peten Itza to the far shore, where a short hike leads uphill through vegetation to El Rey Canek Viewpoint. The viewpoint itself crowns what was once a pyramid built by the Mayan king Canek. Stelae discovered there in recent years sit among the overgrown stones. From the top you see Flores Island, the lake spreading below, and on clear days the Mundo Maya International Airport to the south.
After the viewpoint, the boat carries you to El Chechenal Beach, a white-sand strip known for turquoise water and small fish that swim close to shore. The beach sits within forest, so you may hear howler monkeys calling from the trees. Swimming is the main draw here (the water is warm and shallow near the sand), and lunch happens on the beach while you look out over the lake. Bring swimwear and a towel. Sun protection and insect repellent are essential.
The return journey follows the same boat route back to Flores and your hotel. The guide speaks English or Spanish, and the full day includes all entrance fees, the private boat, water and a box lunch.
