The experience
Antigua Guatemala sits about 1 hour 45 minutes inland from the cruise terminal. Your guide picks you up at the welcome hut and drives you to a working coffee plantation, where you walk through each stage of production: the wet mill where beans are fermented and cleaned, the dry mill where they're sorted and hulled, the roasting facility where the beans turn from green to brown, and the packaging line. You taste a cup of real, 100% pure Antigua coffee at the end of the tour. The coffee this region is known for.
After the plantation, you move into a 45-minute chocolate workshop. You make your own truffles from scratch while the guide explains how the Maya first discovered cacao and how the beans were processed into a drink centuries before chocolate became a European delicacy. This is hands-on: you're tempering, shaping and finishing the chocolates yourself, not watching a demonstration.
On the drive back to the cruise terminal, you stop in Antigua Guatemala for a sightseeing tour of the colonial city: the main square and the Merced Church are the two stops. All schedules adjust to your ship's arrival and departure, so the class can run in the morning, afternoon or whenever your port call allows. Land transport, the guide, all fees and taxes are included.
