The experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the sea or even the boat. It was the two dogs sprawled out on deck like they’d been running tours forever. They barely looked up when we climbed aboard in Carenage. Just a lazy tail thump and then back to their nap. Our guide, Marcus, handed me a mask and grinned, “They might swim with us later.” The air smelled faintly of salt and sunscreen. Someone nearby had already opened a soda. I didn’t expect to feel so immediately relaxed.

We sailed out toward Molinière Underwater Sculpture Park, which I’d seen in photos but honestly didn’t do justice to what it feels like underwater. The sculptures are eerie: some half-covered in coral, others almost ghostly as fish darted between them. Marcus pointed out a statue called “The Lost Correspondent” and told us how locals believe the sea’s slowly claiming every piece. At one point I floated above a ring of figures holding hands and could hear nothing but my own breath in the snorkel: kind of peaceful but also a little haunting. My partner tried to say something through his snorkel but it came out as muffled bubbles. We both cracked up.

Lunch was served back on board: spicy grilled chicken, rice that tasted smoky (in a good way), salads with bright mango chunks. The chef popped his head out to ask if anyone wanted seconds. I did not refuse. While we ate, one of the dogs trotted over and waited hopefully for scraps (I caved). Afterward we drifted along Flamingo Bay Reef (the water so clear you could spot yellowtail snapper from the deck), and then just stretched out in the sun. There was this moment where everyone went quiet except for the wind and someone’s laughter drifting from up front.

Later, as we cruised past Grand Anse beach toward sunset, Marcus poured prosecco into plastic cups and passed around homemade appetizers (the little fried things, I never caught the name). The dogs finally got their swim. One paddled after us for a bit before hopping back on board looking smug and damp. Watching the sky go orange over Grenada’s coastline with salt still on my skin.
