The experience
The drive itself is half the journey. You leave Athens heading south along Poseidon Avenue, a coastal road that hugs the water for roughly 70 km through the Attica peninsula. The route crosses the southern suburbs and opens onto small sandy beaches where the sea catches the light. About an hour in, the tour stops at Lake Vouliagmeni, a thermal lake fed by underground mineral springs and connected to the sea. The water sits near the shore, ringed by cliffs, and the operator notes it was formed when the roof of an underground cave collapsed. The mineral content is said to be beneficial for skin and bones.
Cape Sounio sits at the southern tip of Attica, where the Athenians built the Temple of Poseidon in 440 BC. The temple stands on a rock overlooking the Aegean, and from there you get an open view across the water. The tour is timed to reach the temple as the sun drops toward the horizon. On the return drive to Athens, you can stop for dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants along the route if you want fresh fish or seafood.
The car is private (either a luxury sedan or minivan depending on your party size) with air conditioning, WiFi, and bottled water included. The driver speaks English but is not licensed to guide you inside archaeological sites, so if you want interpretation at the temple itself, you can add a licensed tour guide at checkout. The vehicle is wheelchair accessible and can store a folded wheelchair, though it has no ramp or lift.
