The Experience

The first thing I remember is our driver, Yannis, waving us into his van with a grin—he handed me a bottle of water before I’d even put my backpack down. We were barely out of Athens when he started pointing out little bakeries tucked between apartment blocks, saying which ones had the best spanakopita (I still don’t know how to pronounce it right). The city noise faded fast, replaced by this salty breeze as we hugged the coast along Poseidon Avenue. There were so many tiny beaches—some with families already swimming, even though it was barely 10am. I kept craning my neck to catch glimpses of the Saronic Gulf between pine trees.

Lake Vouliagmeni surprised me. It’s sort of hidden behind some rocks, but you walk down and suddenly there’s this mineral lake—steam rising off the surface even in spring. The water was warm, almost silky on my skin, and there was this faint smell of seaweed mixed with sunscreen from other swimmers. I just floated for a while staring up at cliffs streaked orange by sunlight. Didn’t expect to feel that calm honestly.

We dried off and drove further south through Lagonisi (Yannis slowed so we could see the color of the sea—he called it “Greek blue,” which made us laugh). By late afternoon we reached Cape Sounion. The Temple of Poseidon stands right on this cliff edge—I mean really right on it, wind whipping around those old marble columns. Yannis told us Lord Byron carved his name here somewhere, though I didn’t spot it. The view over the Aegean is huge and open; people just stood there quietly or took photos without much talking. I still think about that silence—the kind that makes you want to stay a bit longer than planned.
