The experience
The workshop runs from 10:00 AM to approximately 2:00 PM in a traditional courtyard shaded by orange and lemon trees, located just 15 minutes south of Sparta. You start by choosing a base pattern (either a Greek Roman design or your own), then select stone colors from what's available. The instructor guides you through mixing adhesive with dry pigments to get the shade you want, then shows you how to use nippers and tweezers to cut and place each piece. If time allows, you'll work with a hammer and hardie, the same tools Romans used 2,000 years ago.
At noon the group breaks for refreshments and a traditional snack, giving you time to rest and talk with other participants. You then return to finish your mosaic with continued guidance on technique. When it's done, your piece gets wrapped in bubble wrap so it travels safely home. After the workshop ends, you'll receive an email with a writeup of everything demonstrated and the history of mosaics.
The workshop sits only 5 minutes on foot from the main square of the village, where cafés and tavernas serve lunch if you want to stay longer. For those interested in the landscape, the Anakolo Gorge, Rasina River and a Hellenistic Bridge dating back 2,000 years are another 5 minutes beyond the square. Free parking is available at the workshop.
