The experience

The day starts at the old port in Ornos, a steep descent from the clifftop town: most travelers take the cable car down (3 minutes, 6€ per way), though the 587 steps and local donkeys are options for those who want them. Your guide meets you at the tiny port tucked under the cave houses and gets everyone oriented on the boat before departure.

Twenty minutes of sailing brings you to Nea Kameni, the active volcanic island. Next is Palea Kameni, where you stop for 30 minutes near Agios Nicholaos' beach and its famous thermal springs. The water is warm and mixed with sulfur, iron and minerals from the volcano.
