The Experience

You start with a pickup from your hotel and a drive to Athinios port, where the King Thiras boat waits. The first stop is Nea Kameni, the active lava island. You walk a soil path up to the crater itself—close enough to see the still-steaming ground—then return to the boat for the sail to Palea Kameni. There the boat stops about 50 meters from the hot springs, and you can dive into the green thermal water or stay aboard and watch.

Thirasia is next, and this is where the day slows down. You have two hours on the island—time enough to swim off the beach, sit down for a seaside lunch (you arrange and pay for your own food), or climb the winding steps into the village of Manolas to see the traditional houses. The boat crew and your English-speaking guide are with you the whole way, answering questions about what was here before the volcano's big explosion separated Thirasia from Santorini.

On the sail back to Athinios, the boat passes below the cliffs of Oia village, and this is when most people take their photos—the light is what it is at that hour, and the cliffs are the cliffs. Once you're back at the port, the bus is waiting to drive you back to where you started. The whole loop takes about 10 hours from pickup to return.
