The Experience

“You sure you’ve kayaked before?” our guide Yannis grinned as he handed me the paddle. I just shrugged — honestly, I was more focused on the weird mix of sunscreen and salty air than my paddling technique. We set off from the edge of Black Beach, the sand still warm under my feet even as the sun started dipping lower. The water was glassy and quiet except for our paddles slapping at first (I got better). Every so often Yannis would point out something — a chunk of white cliff, a fishing boat bobbing way out, or the way the volcanic rocks changed color. I didn’t expect to notice so many shades between black and red.

We hugged the coastline, drifting past White Beach and then that wild stretch of red cliffs — it looked almost fake in the late light. There was this moment where we ducked into a sea cave and everything echoed, even our laughter. I could smell wet stone and maybe something like seaweed? Hard to say. We stopped at Kampia Beach for a swim; I tried snorkeling but mostly floated around staring up at those pale cliffs while someone’s dog barked somewhere behind us. The water tasted like salt and summer.

Dinner came after we pulled up our kayaks — sandals back on, hair still sticky with saltwater. The taverna felt like someone’s backyard: plastic chairs, grilled fish smells drifting out from the kitchen, old men playing cards nearby. We ate slowly because nobody seemed in a hurry here. Yannis poured us local wine (I probably shouldn’t have tried to pronounce “assyrtiko” but he laughed anyway). The sun finally disappeared behind the caldera while we finished eating. That view sticks with me — not just because of how it looked but how quiet it felt sitting there after all that paddling.
