Sailing past red and white beaches to santorini’s volcano with greek lunch

You’ll sail Santorini’s coast by private catamaran with local guides, swimming near volcanic beaches and soaking in hot springs before sharing fresh Greek food onboard. Expect laughter over mispronounced words, sun-warmed tomatoes at lunch, and quiet moments watching cliffs drift past—the kind of day you’ll remember every time you smell salt or grilled fish again.

The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how the cliffs around Vlychada port looked almost sculpted—like someone had dragged their fingers through wet sand and just left it that way. Our captain, Nikos, grinned when he handed me a coffee (stronger than I expected) as we set off. The boat hummed quietly under us, and honestly, I didn’t realize how different Santorini looks from the water—those layers of ash and pumice stacked up like cake. There was this faint salty smell mixed with sunscreen and something floral from someone’s bag. Not unpleasant.

We drifted close to Red Beach—so red it almost glowed against the blue. Nikos told us about the iron in the rocks while his cousin Maria pointed out swimmers bobbing near shore. She laughed when I tried to say “Kokkini Paralia” in Greek—definitely butchered it. We didn’t stop there but got even closer to White Beach next, where the cliffs turned pale and chalky. The water was so clear you could see pebbles on the bottom, and when we jumped in near the volcano later (Nea Kameni), there was this weird warm patch from the hot springs that felt like stepping into a bath after cool sea water. My skin smelled faintly of sulfur for hours after.

Lunch was cooked right on deck—grilled fish, tomatoes that tasted like sun, bread still warm. Local white wine kept appearing in my glass (I stopped asking after a while). There was a quiet moment when everyone just watched the caldera cliffs slide by—nobody talking, just forks scraping plates and wind flapping towels dry on the railings. On our way back toward Vlychada, fruit salad appeared out of nowhere. I still think about that view over the stern: sunlight catching spray as we passed Akrotiri lighthouse—felt like time slowed down a bit there.
