Santorini Caldera Trail Hike: Sunset Views from Fira to Oia
Walk the rim of a volcano and watch the sun drop over three islands at once
The Santorini Caldera Trail is a guided hike along the volcanic rim connecting Fira to Oia, passing through Imerovigli and Firostefani on a historic mule path. Hotel pickup and drop-off, an English-speaking guide, and a light picnic lunch are included. The trail takes roughly five hours and ends at sunset on a hilltop with 360-degree views of the Aegean, nearby villages and Thirasia island. Minimum group size is two participants.
The Experience
You'll start with hotel pickup and a scenic drive to Fira, where the old mule path begins. This trail is the one hikers across the globe call Earth's most beautiful hike—and the first stretch shows why. As you walk along the volcanic caldera rim, the Aegean Sea opens up on one side and whitewashed Cycladic chapels dot the cliffs on the other. Your guide leads you past Imerovigli, a village built in the Cycladic style with stone homes stacked into the hillside, and the Firostefani monastery of St. Nicholas, where the views already shift with every turn.
The path climbs to the Prophet Elias chapel, an Orthodox church perched on a mountain that commands views of the surrounding villages and the sea beyond. This is where the group stops for a picnic lunch—a break built into the rhythm of the hike so you can rest and eat without rushing. From here the trail descends toward Oia, and as you approach the coastal village, the landscape opens into a 360-degree panorama: Thirasia island in the distance, the villages below, the sea wrapping around everything. You'll reach the hilltop just as the sun begins to set, and you'll watch it drop over the water from a vantage point few travelers ever reach.
The hike covers five hours total, including the picnic break. Your guide speaks English throughout, and the hotel pickup and drop-off mean you don't arrange transport yourself. Wear sturdy hiking shoes (not included) and bring sun protection and water—the trail is exposed and the sun reflects off the white stone. The path is steep in places and demands a moderate level of fitness; it's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.

Is this one for you?The five-hour commitment leaves room for a morning swim or a meal in Fira before pickup, but not much else—book this if the sunset hike is your main event for the day. If you need flexibility to explore villages or shops on your own schedule, a self-guided walk would suit you better, though you'd miss the guide's knowledge of the path and the timed arrival at sunset.

What's the actual hiking distance on the Caldera Trail from Fira to Oia?
The trail covers the volcanic rim between Fira and Oia over roughly five hours of walking, including a lunch break at the Prophet Elias chapel. The path is steep in sections and follows the historic mule route that once connected the two villages, so the distance is measured more by time and terrain than by flat kilometers.
Do I need my own hiking shoes, or are they provided?
Hiking shoes are not included with the tour, so you'll need to bring your own sturdy pair. The trail is rocky and steep in places, and proper footwear makes a real difference on the volcanic stone and the mule path sections.
What time does the sunset happen, and will we actually see it from the trail?
The hike is timed to end at the hilltop near Oia just as the sun sets, so you'll watch it drop over the Aegean from a 360-degree vantage point. The exact time depends on the season, but your guide will plan the pace so the timing works out.
Is the picnic lunch included, and can I request a specific diet?
A light picnic lunch is included and eaten at the Prophet Elias chapel during the hike. Let the operator know about any dietary requirements when you book, and they'll arrange it in advance.
What's included in the hotel pickup, and how early do I need to be ready?
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included in the tour price. Your guide will collect you from your hotel and drive you to the trailhead at Fira, then return you at the end of the day after sunset. Confirm your hotel location and pickup time when you book.
Is this hike suitable if I'm visiting Santorini for the first time?
Yes—the Caldera Trail is the signature hike on the island and shows you the volcanic landscape, the Cycladic villages and the sunset all in one day. It's famous enough that many first-time visitors make it their main activity, though it does require moderate fitness and sturdy legs for the steep sections.
