I’d barely stepped outside Santorini airport, still blinking from the flight, when our driver waved and grinned like he’d been waiting just for us. The air was warm but not heavy, sort of salty too (I guess that’s the sea nearby). He helped with our bags before I could even fumble for them. Inside the minivan it was cool, almost too cool after the sun — but honestly I didn’t mind. There was bottled water waiting, which felt like a small gift after airport chaos.
We slid into traffic (if you can call it that — Santorini roads are more like winding ribbons than actual lanes), and our driver started chatting about where we were headed. He spoke English better than I expected, with this easygoing way of explaining things. At one point he pointed out a white church perched above us and told us the Greek name — I tried to repeat it back and he laughed gently. Maybe I butchered it. The drive itself was quiet in places, just the hum of tires and flashes of blue domes through the window. WiFi actually worked, though I kept looking outside instead.
I noticed how everyone waves here — not big waves, just these small flicks of the hand as cars pass each other on narrow bends. Our driver did it too without thinking. When we finally pulled up to our hotel (he knew exactly where to go), he handed back my bag with a nod and said “Welcome to Santorini.” It was simple but somehow meant more after that short ride. Not sure why that stuck with me.
