The experience
The hike starts at the lake of Zaros, where the E4 trail enters the gorge of Agios Nikolaos. For the first two hours, you walk along the river bed itself: a path that fills with water in spring and pools into small ponds where waterfalls form. The gorge narrows as you climb, and the landscape shifts from open water to the dense, protected forest of Rouvas, where holly trees grow at a density rare enough to be of national interest. The entire walk to this point covers almost 5 kilometers.
At Ai Giannis, a landscaped picnic area sits beside a mountain shelter with toilets, benches and a natural spring. This is the turning point. Some trekkers rest here and return to the lake the way they came. Others continue uphill to Dyo Prini, a ridge where the view opens across the forest, Zaros and the Messara plain below. Your guide will help you decide based on how you're feeling and how much daylight remains. The choice is yours to make on the day.
Your guide speaks English and carries the route knowledge. Trekking poles and a backpack are available if you want them. You get a snack pack (energy bar, fruit, water) and two bottles of water per person. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included if you're within the predefined pickup area. Confirm your location when you book.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Greek.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Rouvas forest, and why does it matter?
Rouvas is a protected ecosystem of holly trees in the gorge of Agios Nikolaos, designated as a forest of national interest because of the density and type of growth found there. You walk through it after climbing from the river bed, roughly two hours into the trek.
How much of the hike is actually in the river bed?
The river bed walk makes up the first two hours and covers almost 5 kilometers. In spring, when water flow is high, you'll see waterfalls and ponds along the way. In drier months, the bed is passable but less dramatic.
What happens at the mountain shelter, and do I have to keep going?
At Ai Giannis, you reach a picnic area with a shelter, toilets, benches and a spring. This is where you and your guide decide whether to return to Zaros or continue uphill to Dyo Prini for the ridge view. Both options are valid. The choice depends on your energy and daylight.
Do I need my own trekking poles and backpack?
No. Trekking poles and a backpack are available upon request and included in the tour. Bring them if you prefer your own, but they are not required.
Is this trek suitable if I have not hiked much before?
The tour requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The eight-hour day, the river bed terrain and the elevation gain mean this is not a casual walk. If you are unsure about your fitness, discuss it with the operator before booking.
