A full-day guided hike through Samaria Gorge from Heraklion covers 18 kilometers of the longest gorge in Europe, starting from the Omalos plateau and descending through White Mountain forests and river valleys to the village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. The experience

The day starts with a three-hour bus ride from your hotel to the Omalos plateau, with a 25-minute rest stop along the way. Once at the trailhead, the gorge itself opens up: 18 kilometers of walking that descends steadily through the White Mountains, past thousand-year-old forests, and alongside a small river that cuts through the rock. Your guide leads the group through the entire route, pointing out the Cretan wild goats (Kri-Kri) that live in the gorge and explaining the landscape as you move through it. The walk takes around 4.5 hours and requires a solid level of fitness. The path is well-established but uneven, and the descent is relentless.

At the gorge's exit sits Agia Roumeli, a village wedged between the massive rock walls and the Libyan Sea. This is where the hike stops being work. You have time to swim in the sea, dry off on the beach, and eat lunch at one of the small taverns with views across the water. The village has no road access (the gorge is the only way in or out), which is why it feels isolated and why the swim feels earned.

After Agia Roumeli, a one-hour boat carries you to Chora Sfakion, where buses wait to drive you back to Heraklion. The return journey takes about three hours, with one more rest stop after Rethymno. Your guide and driver stay with the group throughout. The tour includes liability insurance through Allianz, an air-conditioned vehicle, and guides who speak English, French, German, Polish and one additional language depending on your pickup location. Lunch and entry to Samaria Gorge National Park are not included in the tour price, though taverns at Agia Roumeli serve food, and supplies can be bought at the Omalos plateau before you enter the gorge.
