The Experience

We climbed onto the boat at Vlicha Bay, sandals in hand and sun already warming the deck. The air smelled faintly salty and sweet — kind of like sunscreen mixed with watermelon. Our guide, Yannis, grinned as he handed out snorkels and made a joke about “Greek time” (which I still don’t really get). We set off toward Lindos, water flickering all blue and silver under the hull. I didn’t expect how quiet it would feel out there — just the hum of the engine and someone’s laugh drifting back from the bow.

The first stop was these caves near Lindos. Yannis called them “hidden,” though I guess everyone knows about them now. He tossed me a mask and said to go slow — “the rocks are older than your country.” I slid into the water (colder than I thought) and floated for a minute, watching little fish dart around my toes. Inside the cave it smelled cool and mineral-y, almost like wet stone. My friend tried to say something but her voice echoed weirdly off the walls — we just started laughing instead.

After that we headed for Navarone Bay. The cliffs here are high and kind of dramatic (not in a postcard way — more raw). We dropped anchor; someone sliced up this huge bowl of local fruit that tasted even sweeter after swimming. There was unlimited beer and wine too, which made everyone a bit friendlier by the time we reached St Paul’s Bay for one last swim. That bay is smaller than I pictured but honestly just being able to float there for half an hour felt… easy? Like you could forget what day it is. On the way back Yannis pointed out the Acropolis of Lindos up on its hill — looked ancient and stubborn against the sky.
