The Experience
“You’re holding it upside down,” Kostas grinned as I fumbled with the paddleboard. The water was warmer than I expected, kind of silky against my legs, and the air smelled faintly like salt and sunscreen. We’d just left Rethymno’s harbor on this sunset catamaran trip — honestly, I signed up for the sushi part but ended up caring more about the way the light hit the sea. There was this easy chatter among everyone on board (maybe it was the first glass of prosecco?), and soft music playing somewhere behind us. I kept thinking: is this what locals do after work?
When we anchored in a quiet bay, some folks dove straight in. I tried snorkeling for maybe five minutes before giving up — my mask fogged up and I started laughing underwater, which is not recommended. Someone handed me a slice of watermelon while I dried off in the sun. The crew kept bringing out these little plates of sushi rolls (I’m still not sure how they made them taste so fresh at sea), plus fruit and snacks that tasted like summer. The open bar didn’t hurt either; Greek white wine just feels right out here.
There was a pink flamingo float bobbing around that became an accidental group mascot — even our guide took a selfie with it. Around us, kids were giggling over fishing lines while older couples lounged under shaded awnings. It’s funny how quickly strangers start swapping stories when there’s nowhere to rush off to. By the time the sky went gold and pink over Crete, nobody was looking at their phones anymore — except to try (and fail) to capture that color. I still think about that view sometimes when things get too noisy back home.
