The experience
Your driver picks you up from your hotel at a time you choose and spends the full day showing you the island's interior. This is not a bus tour with fixed stops and a schedule that moves on whether you're ready. You decide how long to linger at each place, which villages to skip, and whether to add a lunch break in Filoti beneath the plane trees. The driver is an informal local guide who shares stories and history at each stop but cannot enter museums or archaeological sites themselves. They'll brief you before you go in and answer questions when you return.
The route threads through villages most day-trippers miss. You'll see the Temple of Demeter, built in the 6th century BCE in a fertile valley near Sangri, then watch a potter at work in Damalas. The craft has passed from grandfather to grandfather since the late 19th century. Chalki, the island's former capital, sits at 270 meters on the Tragaia plateau and holds neoclassical mansions and a citrus distillery where you can taste Kitron, the local liqueur. Filoti, the largest village in Naxos, spreads beneath Mount Zas at 400 meters. Apeiranthos climbs even higher at 570–640 meters and has been a protected traditional settlement since 1978. The Kouros of Apollonas (a 10-meter marble statue from the 6th century BCE, unfinished and still resting in its original quarry) shows the scale of ancient Naxian sculpture. The day ends at the Eggares Olive Oil Museum in a restored press, where you see the tools and methods that have shaped Mediterranean life.
The tour runs 12 hours and includes hotel pickup and drop-off, fuel, water, and WiFi on board. A sedan carries 1–3 people; a minivan fits 4–8; a minibus holds 9–12. Some sites close on public holidays or for maintenance, so check opening hours before you book or contact the operator if a stop is unexpectedly shut. They'll suggest an alternative. Licensed guides are available as an add-on if you want someone to accompany you inside the attractions.

Is this one for you?Choose the full-day option if you want to move slowly through the interior villages and have time to explore each stop (pottery studios, distilleries, museums and the olive oil press) without rushing. The half-day tour covers fewer sites at a faster pace if you prefer a shorter commitment or want to spend the rest of your day on the beach or in Chora.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I choose which villages to visit, or is the itinerary fixed?
You set the itinerary. The tour includes these seven stops (Temple of Demeter, Damalas pottery, Chalki, Filoti, Apeiranthos, Kouros of Apollonas, and Eggares), but you decide which ones matter to you and how long to spend at each. Your driver will work with your preferences.
What time does the tour start and end?
You choose your pickup time when you book. The full-day tour runs 12 hours from pickup, so if you're collected at 9am, you'll return to your hotel around 9pm. Half-day options are also available if you prefer a shorter outing.
Can I have lunch during the tour?
Meals and beverages are not included, but Filoti is built around a central square with cafés and tavernas beneath plane trees: a natural place to stop for lunch or coffee. Your driver can recommend spots and adjust the day's pace to fit a meal break.
Will the driver go inside the museums and archaeological sites with me?
Drivers cannot enter museums or archaeological areas, but they'll give you background and suggestions before you explore on your own, then answer questions when you return. If you want a guide to accompany you inside the attractions, licensed guides are available as an add-on.
What is the Kouros of Apollonas?
The Kouros of Apollonas is a massive marble statue from the 6th century BCE, over 10 meters long, believed to depict Dionysus or Apollo. It was never finished and still lies in its original quarry near the village of Apollonas, showing the skill of ancient Naxian sculptors and the island's marble-carving heritage.
What happens if a site is closed on the day of my tour?
Some attractions close on public holidays, for maintenance, or for special events. Verify opening hours on the attraction's official website or contact the operator before your tour date. If a stop is unexpectedly closed, the operator will offer a suitable alternative.
