The experience
The hike starts at Prodromou Monastery, a Greek Orthodox structure built directly into the cliff in the 16th century, where your guide briefs the group before the descent begins. From there the trail drops into the gorge itself, following the Lousios River through a landscape of ancient hermitages, stone mills and natural springs. The path crosses the river at points where, according to local legend, the infant Zeus was bathed: a detail that anchors the walk in both geology and myth.
Midway through, the group stops for a rest and a homemade snack made from local products. The trail then leads to Ancient Gortys, a city that once stood beside the river as a sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing. The ruins show how important the site was in antiquity as a place of health and recovery. At the end of the hike, before the drive back to the starting point, you have the chance to wade into the cold river water: a practical way to cool tired feet after three hours on the trail.
The route is not flat: it requires moderate fitness and involves descent and uneven terrain through the canyon. Children from age 10 can join. The guide speaks English or Greek and stays with the group throughout.

What is Prodromou Monastery and why does the hike start there?
Prodromou Monastery, also called St. John the Baptist Monastery, is a 16th-century Greek Orthodox structure built dramatically into the rock face of the gorge. The hike begins at this site because it sits at the top of the canyon and offers a natural starting point for the descent through Lousios Gorge.

What is Ancient Gortys and what will I see there?
Ancient Gortys was a city built beside the river and dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing, making it an important sanctuary for health and well-being in ancient times. The hike ends at the ruins of this site, where you can see the remains of this historical settlement.
