LGBTQ+ Walking Food Tour Athens: Psiri, Monastiraki & Local Eats
Taste Athens through the neighborhoods that matter to its LGBTQ+ community
This walking food tour of Athens pairs Greek street food with the history of LGBTQ+ spaces in the city, led by GK, a bilingual local guide. You'll start at Monastiraki, move through Psiri to sample koulouri and bougatsa, explore the spice markets along Evripidou Street, then return to Monastiraki for a family-style lunch of gyro, souvlaki or kebab with Greek salad, finishing with loukoumades for dessert.
Step-by-step itinerary
Athens LGBTQ+ walking food tour
- Meet at Monastiraki train station
- Enjoy koulouri and coffee in Psiri
- Taste tea and explore spice markets
- Visit charcuterie shops
- Have family-style lunch in Monastiraki
- Try loukoumades for dessert
The experience
Monastiraki is your meeting point, and from there the route moves into Psiri, where you'll stop at the square to taste koulouri from the Koulouri Factory and take coffee and bougatsa at a local bougatsadiko. The walk continues along Evripidou Street through the spice markets, a sensory shift from the neighborhoods, where you'll have tea and visit charcuterie shops. GK shares stories about the places you pass and the people who've made them significant to Athens's LGBTQ+ community, weaving that history into what you're eating and where.
Lunch happens back in Monastiraki, family-style: you choose between gyro, souvlaki or kebab, all served with Greek salad. Dessert is loukoumades, the honey puffs locals prefer, eaten at a spot next door. The whole outing runs two to three hours and includes bottled water, all the snacks and tastings along the way, coffee or tea, and lunch itself. The pace is walking speed through active neighborhoods, so the route stays on level ground and public transit is nearby if you need it.
GK leads in English and Greek, and the group stays small enough that you can actually talk, not just follow. This is not a sightseeing tour with food as a side note. The food and the stories are the same thing, and the neighborhoods matter because of who they've been home to.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the Koulouri Factory in Psiri, and why do locals line up for it?
Koulouri is a ring-shaped bread studded with sesame seeds, a street food staple in Athens. The Koulouri Factory in Psiri is where you'll taste an authentic version, and it's a stop early in the walk so you get the feel of the neighborhood before moving deeper into it.
Does the tour include a full meal, or just snacks?
Lunch is included and it's a proper meal: you choose gyro, souvlaki or kebab with Greek salad, eaten family-style in Monastiraki. Snacks and tastings happen at other stops (koulouri, bougatsa, tea, charcuterie), and dessert is loukoumades after lunch.
What are loukoumades, and where do you eat them?
Loukoumades are fried honey puffs, a traditional Greek dessert. You'll have them at a shop next door to where you eat lunch in Monastiraki, finishing the tour with something sweet.
How much walking is involved, and what's the pace like?
The tour runs two to three hours and moves through neighborhoods on foot at a walking pace. The route stays on level ground, and public transportation is available nearby if needed. It's designed to be manageable while still covering real distance through the city.
Will GK talk about LGBTQ+ history in Athens, or is that just the tour's angle?
GK shares stories about the neighborhoods you walk through and their significance to Athens's LGBTQ+ community as part of the tour itself. The history and the food are woven together, not separate. You're learning about the places through both what you eat and what happened there.
