The experience

The tour starts at the church in Monastiraki Square with a fresh fruit juice and koulouri. A Greek breakfast spread that includes cheese pie and spinach pie, eaten at a local café over traditional Greek coffee. From there you walk into the backstreets around the Central Market, one of Europe's oldest, where herb and spice shops let you taste and smell Greek yogurt, olive oil, tea, chamomile and cured beef. The guide fills in stories about daily life and culture as you move through the neighborhoods.

The route takes you to Aiolou, a chic area lined with local restaurants where you try Greek meze paired with ouzo or tsipouro, traditional Greek liqueurs. A pastry shop comes next: loukoumades are golden donuts soaked in sweet syrup and sprinkled with cinnamon and walnuts, nothing like the fried dough you might expect. Then comes the meat and fish market of Varvakeios Agora. The final stop is souvlaki, marinated in lemon juice, olive oil, oregano, salt and pepper, grilled on skewers and served in pita bread. Your guide gets in line while you rest in the beautiful Agia Eirini square.

The tour covers more than 8 different stops, with food and beverage samples, coffee or tea, and snacks included throughout. Groups stay small, and the guide speaks English. Public transportation is available nearby if you need it, and the tour suits all fitness levels. If weather forces a cancellation, you can reschedule or get a full refund.
