Step-by-step itinerary

Kayak tour from Damouchari to Fakistra

  • Paddle along rocky coastline
  • Stop at hidden wild bay
  • Visit Panagia Megalomata sea cave
  • Explore more sea caves and cliffs
  • Land on Fakistra beach
  • Swim and picnic at Fakistra

The experience

The paddle starts at Damouchari, an old Venetian harbor with a documented history (the Mamma Mia film was shot here), and your local guide explains the place before you leave the water. After a couple of kilometers along a rocky, natural coastline, you stop at a hidden wild bay fed by fresh water springs, once a partisan refuge. The real draw comes next: the sea cave of Panagia Megalomata, with a large entrance open to the sea, stalactites, stalagmites and enough interior height for multiple kayaks to float inside. The guide tells the story of a hidden school that operated on the cliff above during Ottoman times, connecting the cave to the social and economic life of the region.

From there you paddle past more sea caves and vertical cliffs outside Fakistra bay before landing on the beach itself: a pristine stretch accessible only on foot or by boat. You spend about an hour swimming and eating a fresh Dakos (Greek bruschetta with crispy bread, tomato, feta and local herbs, a vegan option is available if you request it in advance). The kayaks are double or single, very stable and equipped with life vests, dry bags, carbon-shaft paddles and wetsuits for cooler months. The pace is slow and the stops are frequent, so the experience suits families, teenagers and adults of any age who can swim.

Guides are locals raised in Pelion, experienced in both the water and the history of the coast. They speak English, Spanish or Greek, and children from age four are welcome on the trip. The idea is recreation and a holistic experience, not a test of fitness: only basic fitness is required, and the distance is right for everyone to complete comfortably.
